Gum care starts in the home with brushing and flossing and continues in the dentist to prevent the build-up of plaque.
The ways of gum disease prevention
Brushing and flossing at home are the first steps to good gum care as this limits the amount of plaque on your gums. You will also need regular cleaning by your dentist or dental hygienist, however, to remove any that has hardened to become tartar. The procedure in the dentist is very simple, and involves scaling the teeth to remove tartar on your gums and below.
In more serious cases of tartar build-up, root planning may be required. It is a deeper clean that also smooths out teeth root irregularities. The objective is to remove the built-up tartar and reduce the potential of plaque building up in the future.
Regular check-up gums by your dentist are essential to:
- Ensure good gum care
- Prevent the onset of gum disease
- Enhance the appearance of your teeth and gums by removing plaque
- Identify gum problems early
